IHG Academy Frontier Programme
In March of 2016, four eager, young, passionate, Chinese IHG Academy students boarded an airplane bound for the Maldives. These four participants had been selected to spend the next six months gaining work experience and building their skills at Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives. There, they would work across a variety of operational roles including F&B service, front desk, and guest services - the IHG Academy Frontier Programme.

Where are they now?
The first four participants all had a wonderful time and have since come back to China to continue their journey with local IHG hotels. They shared that their highlights included; the international colleagues and guests they met, new friendships made, the beautiful new country they experienced, hospitality skills they honed, English language skills refined, confidence gained and lifelong memories they created.
Candy, one of the four interns, is now working in InterContinental Shanghai NECC as a sales coordinator.
“During the 6 months, I rotated around the front desk, call centre, and reservation departments. For me, the most satisfying moments during my internship in the Maldives were when I helped check-in guests from China, giving them a bit of familiarity even though they were thousands of miles away from home. I also helped guests plan for a perfect honeymoon. This experience gave me confidence that I do indeed want to work in the hotel industry after graduation. I also gained a much deeper understanding of what it means to serve guests with passion and positivity.”
Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives has since taken in a second batch of six Chinese IHG Academy interns who began their programme in October, 2016.
InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort joins the programme
After seeing the success of the IHG Academy Frontier Programme in the Maldives, the InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort also decided to get on board. Ann, Healthy and Gerry arrived in Mauritius last October to commence their six-month programme.
Healthy, is working in Guest Relations:
“This department is such an important part of the Front Office. Our team is made up of colleagues from all over the world. We have Germans, Indians, Mauritians, and now, me from China! I’ve made meaningful friendships and I really enjoy working together with my colleagues. InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort is such a great platform for me to practice my English communication skills. It’s an honour to deliver service to guests from China and all around the world. I am very much looking forward to spending the next few months here.”
Michael Janssen, General Manager of InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort, also feels positive about this great opportunity to share international talent.
“Since they came here, these three IHG Academy interns have been contributing a lot to the guest experience in the front office and food & beverage outlets for our Chinese guests. At the same time, we invest in helping them to develop their attitude, skills, and knowledge. I am so pleased with this IHG Academy Frontier Program that I’ve already told the Senior Manager for the IHG Academy, Greater China, that I need even more Chinese IHG Academy interns next year! These first batch have really proven their value.”
