We know how disappointing it can be when you don’t land that new job or promotion you were hoping for. But try not to be too disheartened – this is a chance to take stock and learn from your experience. This way you can come back fighting at your next interview and be prepared for the questions you found challenging the first time around.
So whether your interview didn’t go quite to plan, or you lost out last minute to another candidate, don’t panic. The key to job success is to ace what you’re already good at - playing to your strengths. Here are a few tips to help you better utilise your strengths.
1. Where do you want to be?
So embarking on a new role, promotion, or complete change of company can be a really big deal. If you’ve been unsuccessful internally or externally don’t let that put you off. Sometimes it just isn’t meant to be, but that doesn’t mean to say you can’t give another role within that company a go.
First it would be wise to define exactly where you want to be. Once you’ve figured that out you can start to align your existing strengths and experience to it. Do you want to remain in your hometown? Or are you looking for a change of location? These are the questions you should start with.
2. What are you good at?
Once you’ve decided where you want to be, whether that’s home, away, perhaps in a Holiday Inn, or Crowne Plaza? Now have a think about what you’re good at. Have you always been more inclined to creative roles that require innovative thought, would a fast paced environment behind the scenes suit you best? You’re a definite chef in the making.
Do you take to management well, multitasking from day to day and prioritizing tasks based on human needs and behaviours? Sounds like you’d be a great General Manager to us.
Maybe you’re a mixture between being highly creative and efficient but like to please people too? Our food and beverage team are responsible for creating the ultimate customer experience while contributing creatively to menus and concepts behind the bar.
3. What do you enjoy?
When you land at a bit of a career crossroads and are wondering which way to turn, asking yourself what you enjoy can help you shape your pathway. Someone once said enjoying your job is half the battle, whoever that was really wasn’t lying.
Defining what you enjoy goes hand in hand with what you’re good at and so deciding on a role or career will come as a result. At IHG we have such a vast array of opportunities, but no matter where you sit in the business our brand promise remains.
4. Set yourself a goal and don’t stop until you achieve it
