Jacobs journey: From Holiday Inn Takeover student to Events Manager
Once a year for a whole week, hundreds of hospitality students will take over some of our much-loved Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts UK hotels. It’s a great opportunity to give young, talented people an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the hospitality industry.
Jacob took part in our Hotel Takeover four years ago, at Holiday Inn Norwich North. We caught up with him to find out about his journey from student to Events Manager, in the very same hotel!
Can you tell us about your journey from Holiday Inn Takeover participant to your current role?
Four years ago, I shadowed the operations manager at Holiday Inn Norwich North for the Takeover. I had already worked at another hotel in Norwich too as well whilst I was studying. I left college with a Level 3 diploma in hospitality and started working at Norwich North in October 2016.
What were your key learnings from the week and what did you learn about running a hotel?
Because I was already working at another hotel it was not completely new to be part of the experience but I learned a lot about ‘behind the scenes’ stuff - I never had a chance to do that in the other hotel. As an operations manager, I learned about payroll and got a much more detailed insight into how different departments are run. I ran the restaurant for lunch and the gala dinner too!
Would you recommend the Takeover to future students?
I would recommend it. I was interested to see how the new students took on the challenge. Participating in the hotel Takeover helped me with my promotion last year to an events manager, as it gave me a good understanding of how a hotel is run.
What are your future career aspirations?
My short-term goal is to make a difference at the hotel and improve the processes and procedures there. Long term, I’d like to be a Food and Beverages Manager or Operations Manager at this hotel.
