Applying for a job doesn’t have to be difficult. We understand that today there are that many sources of advice - it can be difficult to sift through it all to find what’s really meaningful and useful.
When applying for a job we’ve all come across an application form, which can feel like an impersonal shot at selling yourself to that role. So here’s the thing, simplicity is key – in addition to this there are a few quick wins that will help get your application noticed among many others.
Buzzwords. We all use them, and sometimes it’s hard to identify which they are which is why we’re listing 7 buzzwords to avoid in your application.
Innovative – Probably the most overused buzzword of the moment suggesting invention. Innovation may not always be relevant and as hospitality evolves why not consider originality or being contemporary.
Effective – How about active? Effective can be a set up for failure. Failure is ok, as if you’re active in your approach you’re more likely to learn from setbacks and find a solution.
Creative – Yes, a great attribute but its meaning has diluted due to overuse, imaginative or thoughtful are great alternatives.
Motivated- Motivation is a given, and a standard practice at IHG, hospitality is a fast paced, unpredictable industry that requires resilience, so try that word instead.
Driven – Ambition has more meaning than drive, it suggests a more long-term robust attribute, especially in the workplace.
Organised –demonstrating where you’ve been organised and the results it has achieved is much more valuable in an application, give it some context and try setting the scene rather than letting the adjective stand alone.
Dynamic – Finally this buzzword does have great use in the right context but often it stands alone just for the sake of it. Enterprising suggests a similar trait but on a much more advanced and interesting level, it’s bold and complex but is a great talking point.
So there we have it, 7 buzzwords to avoid with some potential alternatives. But before you grab the thesaurus and start flicking through for alternatives – remember, there’s more to branding yourself than adjectives.
