Assistant Training Manager - InterContinental Shenzhen, China
How long have you worked for IHG?
Since June 2012. I was lucky enough to be on the iGrad (graduate) programme. Before this, I studied and worked in events management in Melbourne, Australia.
“What’s great about working for IHG is that there is a very clear career path, which has really helped me to plan my future with the company.”
What was it like on the iGrad programme? What did you learn?
It felt as though I had been through a full medical examination! I learnt all about my strengths and weaknesses, and how to get the very best out of myself professionally. During the programme we also had exposure to all departments in the hotel which really helped me to develop my skillset, operational knowledge and leadership competencies
What's your best memory of the iGrad programme?
All of it! The first orientation session in Shanghai was unforgettable, where I met all the other iGrad students from across Greater China. We really got to know each other and were able to share our experiences of IHG. I also had the opportunity to attend the 2012 Greater China General Manager’s Conference in Macao, where I met IHG’s CEO Richard Solomons. His speech was inspirational and made a lasting impression on me. I have witnessed first-hand the fast growth of IHG in Greater China and I feel very proud to have been part of this journey.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work and how do your hobbies play a part in your working life?
I am an energetic person with lots of interests. My passions are singing and dancing, and at the weekends I enjoy singing Karaoke with my friends or dancing jazz together in our local dance studio. These hobbies keep me happy and healthy, and I hope this shines out at work.
What do you like about the team you work with?
Our team is like a big family. We work hard but always try to have some fun too. We are a very people-orientated team and help each other out whenever we can.
Do you know where you want your IHG career to go? How is IHG helping you to reach this goal?
Human resources is very important to me, and I would like to continue my career in this department. The training offered to me at IHG, which is part of the new HR Career Pathway programme, has given me a very clear idea of what my future here looks like. As well as the professional training programmes on offer, I also have a mentor who gives me fantastic advice about my opportunities for growth and potential developmental areas. I would like to be a mentor to someone one day, so that I too can help lead and encourage them in the same way.
