How to Write the Perfect CV
If you’ve not started your CV, getting the ball rolling can seem like a mammoth task. Many of us leave our outdated CV’s tucked away somewhere or saved on our computer. Perhaps the time has come for you to get your CV up to scratch, or you might have seen an amazing job you really want to apply for.
Your CV can not only help you get your foot in the door, but it can give you a positive first impression. Therefore, it’s important you do everything you can to make it exceptional and truly reflect your experience and abilities. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. We’ve come up with some handy CV writing tips to help you write the perfect CV.
What to include on your CV:
- Your name, address and contact details
- A short paragraph about yourself (personal profile) - This is a summary about you and your skills, it will be the first thing the recruiter reads. Really sell yourself and make sure this paragraph stands out
- Employment history and experience (only include jobs and experience that are relevant to the job you are applying for)
- Hobbies and interests - You don’t have to include these, only if they are related to the job you are applying for in some way or make your CV stand out
- Education and qualifications

Edit your CV for each job
Nowadays it’s not enough to have one CV to rule them all. Companies expect you to adapt your CV so that it appeals to them and is relevant to the role you’re applying for. Just a few tweaks here and there can make all the difference.
Have one main CV that you can edit and adapt. You could even have CV templates for different job roles such as one for marketing and one for sales depending on what jobs you’re applying for.
Avoid generic buzzwords
A lot of candidates tend to use the same words to describe their abilities, which means if you do too, you’re not really any different from anyone else. Words like ‘hard worker’ (everyone should be anyway) and phrases like ‘think outside the box’ don’t really say anything and are hugely overused.
Put some time and effort into the design, but don’t go overboard
Many recruiters might be impressed by a snazzy CV that catches their eye. But it’s important not to make your CV look overly gimmicky or fussy. Be creative by all means, but keep it clear and professional. If you’re not that great at designing beautiful documents, you can always use a CV template. And remember to pick a font that’s easy to read and looks smart.
Shorter is better
On average recruiters spend 8.8 seconds looking at your CV, so what’s the point in writing four pages that won’t be seen? If the company has to go through hundreds of CV’s, they just won’t have time to read pages and pages of info. Aim for around two pages maximum.
Relate your experience back to the role
Where possible, try and relate your experience to the role you are applying for. For example, if you’ve got experience working as a receptionist and you are applying for a hospitality job, explain how the skills you learned make you suitable for the role.
If there’s one tiny error in your CV, it will be noticed, and you will suffer for it. This is a showcase of your attention to detail and it gives an overall impression of you, so typos are unacceptable. Check your CV several times and get someone else to read through it too, just to double check you’ve not missed anything.
